hello, i drive a 2003 sonoma, auto, 4x4, 4.3 v6.

my engine light has been on for a while now and i decided to have it scanned at autozone. the trouble code came up with (cant remember the code number) 'crankshaft position sensor circuit 1'. the guy at autozone said i need to have it looked at by a dealership to find the problem.

has anybody here had the same issue with a crankshaft position sensor circuit 1? what did you have to do or replace to get it fixed.

since i hate being raped by dealerships i will not pay for them to look anything i drive so id really like to do it myself. thanks

Crank sensor

I just replaced the sensor on my 2001 Safari, it is a easy change out but, if your crank sensor is bad, you would not be able to start the motor......at lease that is the way it is on my 2001. As far as changing it out...it was a simple change, mine is on the bottom of the crank shaft, and held in with 1 bolt. .....Let me say this..I am NOT a mechanic but I too refuse to take any car/truck to a dealer simply because they over charge and lie.....you'll find alot of good people on here that know what there talking about. ..good luck, keep us posted.

its not the sensor its the circuit. i replaced the sensor a while back and the light never went off. im assuming somewhere i have a loose or cut wire that goes into the sensor. im also going to bet that the wire is just a loose connection because the truck still runs.

Crank sensor

Look's like your going to have to chase the wire down? you can goggle the wiring diagram that may help you? Wish I was able to help you.

at least i can do that on my own though and not have to overpay a dealership to do it. thanks anyways.

My 2003 4.3L sent various codes about misfires and cps errors.
The tach would bounce around when the engine was under hard acceleration and an intermittent miss would also occur.

I found the following information about the timing reluctor on the harmonic balancer bumping the cps because the phenolic timing cover would warp over time and allow a slight contact.
I also heard a slight "scraping and knocking noise and was confused until I read about the service bulletin on this problem.
The following is the solution to the problem...involving placing a shim(s) under the crank position sensor.
It is located on the front passenger side of the motor near the lower quarter of the harmonic balancer. A 10MM socket and ratchet wrench is all required to remove or replace it. You may need a small screwdriver to assist disconnecting the weatherpack plug. It is so easy a caveman can do it.
I made my own shim, 5mm = approximately .020". I cut a 3/4" hole with a chassis punch, or just check a local GM dealer for one in stock or they can order you one or two.

hello. below is the part #'s required to add clearance to the crankshaft position sensor in your s-10. you shouldn't have to put more than 1-2 shims in place to correct this issue. if you have to use more than 2 shims... the timing cover needs to be replaced.

GM Part Number Description Qty
12565102 Shim, 0.5mm thick 1-2 as req'd
12562910 Sensor Crankshaft Position 1
