I have a '08 GMC 2500HD 4X4 with the 6.0 gas engine. The truck has almost 160000 trouble free miles until today. While driving home I noticed that both the amp gauge and the temp gauge were showing false readings. The temp was reading almost 240 degrees and the amp indicated it was charging almost 20 amps. When I got home I carefully removed the radiator cap to see if the coolant was truly over heating but it was normal. The other two gauges, fuel and oil pressure were working as normal. I called my local repair shop and was informed the the dash cluster was probably bad and needed to be replaced for about $450. He went on to tell me that they have replaced a bunch of these in the past with the same problem and that GMC is notorious for this problem. I was wondering if he was correct in this statement or was he pulling my leg just to get some service. Has anyone else had this problem and what did they do to rectify it?

I had a 2003 that had similar problems. I send the cluster in to AutoXpresstech and they rebuilt the cluster for me for about $100, including the return shipping. I haven't looked at their site recently, but give them a look. It took about 3 - 4 days total, but the nice thing is there is no need to reprogram the mileage. As a bonus, for me anyway, they even cleaned up the lens.

This dashboard issue is the craziest thing. Now all gauges are working and displaying correctly. This past winter the mileage would not show for a few days then that started showing correctly also. This intermittent problem is gonna drive me crazy...LOL

the cure is to re solder the socket connections on the dash panel where the wires plug into it, an electronics tech can do it quite easily, there are several u tube videos showing this procedure, and how to remove it from the dash, I have done a few Chrysler and GM, cars and trucks, follow directions on keeping the guages lined up. try a repair shop that repairs electronic items.

I had the same problem in my last truck, 2005 Chevy 2500HD. I don't remember the place I sent my cluster, could probably find it if you can't, and they just replaced with a rebuilt cluster for about $100. Remove and replace is as easy as removing 4 screws and unplugging a wire harness, took all of 20 minutes.
