Dead remote key fob

I have a 2001 2500HD that the remote door lock key fob went dead. I put a new battery in and it's still dead. I was wondering if anyone knows if it may be the remote and how to get a new one or could it be whatever receiver unit inside the truck is bad and where is it located?
