hello,
newbie here. i have a 1990 Sierra 1500 4x4 that has a Chevy van engine it. i think it could be a 305 but not sure. i was wondering if some guru could tell me what possible options it could be? i dont think it was a 350 since it lacks power but the fellow i bought it from said the engine came from a "chevy van"? thanks for any information given!
jim

well a buddy says it could only be a 305 or 350, so i guess its the 305. spent the afternoon taping up the wiring harness after discovering the old plastic covering was crumbling. looks good. now, to tackle the broken bolt on my power steering assembly...i thought the pulley/belt was shaking more than normal :-(

305 and 350 were both in vans, so it could be either one. If the engine codes are still present (usually found on a pad on the block directly in front of the passenger side head) then you can post it here and I have a database of almost every engine, transmission and axle codes on my computer.

ok, i found two numbers stamped on the block toward the front of the engine that i could see with the waterpump off. "K1117TPM" and "CK4122472" neither mean beans to me so i hope you can help! my buddy who's actually doing most of the work says he found the driveshaft bolts loose from the transfer case! this was making a clinking noise that he thought was the Ujoint at first...wonder if that would make my 4WD go out, which it did? i thought it was the actuator...
thanks again! jim

TPM

8-350 (5.7L) E.F.I.

(VIN K, OPT L05)

Chev Van '89 ser. 10 thru 30

GMC Van '89 ser. 1500 thru 3500

It's possible that it's still running the 305 chip in the computer if it originally came with a 305 and that could be why it doesn't have power, but then again, TBI 350s aren't very powerful to begin with but they are reliable.

My '88 that I am building isn't going to be a 4x4 for long, I am swapping out the engine for a Corvette Tuned Port Injected 350, a Syclone 700r4, Astro AWD transfer case and an Escalade front diff. Essentially becoming a Syclone on Steroids. :)

Thanks Indy! I found a cast number look up site but that TPM suffix seems kinda rare. I didnt notice you were from Tx...no wonder you're cool. (Before i moved to MN i lived off of Manchaca Rd :)

thanks Indy! if would have noticed you're from Texas i would have known
you are cool...i lived off Manchaca Ln b4 i moved here to MN 7 years ago :)

Anytime sir! I'm at 360 and 183 myself. Probably way nicer up there now than it is here. Been hotter than Hades on the 4th of July this month. Dry too, lawn is brown. :( Oh well, I hate doing yard work anyway. hahahah
