The oil life monitor (OLM)does not actually measure the quality of the oil. It provides a gross estimate of oil life based on a computer algorithm developed using a specific type of oil.
You don't have to wait to change to synthetic, change anytime you want. Remember the oil they put in at the factory was supplied by the low bidder. I put synthetic oil in my vehicles at about 1,000 miles. My
Cadillac CTS cames with synthetic oil.
The idea that engines need to break in before using synthetic oil is a myth. It was common years ago for engine manufacturers to recommend non-detergent oils for engine break-in. This was when the pistons used cast-iron “square-faced” rings and the rings needed to wear some to “seat” into the engine. With today’s technology of oils and engine manufacturing, engine manufacturers no longer recommend the use of non-detergent oils for the break-in period. In fact, many engines today are factory-filled with high quality synthetic motor oil, Corvette,
Cadillac for instance.
Benefits of Synthetic Oils
• Improved low temperature characteristics for faster starting and quicker flow to critical parts
• Improved stability through a wide range of temperatures
• Improved fuel economy (.4-.6 MPG) due to reduced internal engine friction and windage (the drag produced by parts moving through the oil bath)
• Emerging and future vehicle emissions regulatory requirements partly depend on the advantages of these high technology lubricants to achieve certification standards.
• Reduced engine deposits
Every lubricant in my truck and car are 100% synthetic. I use nothing but
