Hey folks,
I drive a 2000 Sonoma 4.3L automatic transmission. On the way home last week the engine sputtered and stalled. After pulling off the road, I was able to restart but the accelerator was unresponsive. The engine was starving for fuel. After I had the truck towed home I noticed that the fuel pump was not running. I changed out the relay and no joy. Next I installed a new fuel pump and sending unit. Now the fuel pump still doesn't work and the fuel gauge does not work either. I checked for voltage at the pump across the gray and the solid black wire and there are only a few mili volts. Voltage across the sender is 5 volts as it should be but the gauge still does not work.
Should I be looking somewhere else for pump voltage?
By the way, I bought this truck brand new and have not had any engine problems. I did replace the ECM a year ago for a transmission issue but not problems since, until now. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've been asking around about my fuel pump issue and someone thought it could be a faulty ignition switch. Does anyone else have any thoughts in regards to this theory?

Go under the bed to the rear left corner of the frame and remove and clean the grounding wires connected there. One is for the fuel pump.

I doubt it would be your ignition switch, but you never know. When you turn the key does the dash light up? When you try to start it, does the starter try to turn?

I would check the grounding wire like 'lmleck' said. The grounding wire on my Sonoma was next to the tank, in front of the wheel, bolted to the frame.

I would also inspect the wires and connections as much as possible, following them as far as you can. I had a problem with my Sonoma where wires touching the body of the vehicle melted and became exposed, creating a short in the circuit which would only short out when the wire moved and made contact with metal.

When you Replace a fuel pump, you should always replace the fuel filter as well.

Check all of your fuses. I know how that sounds, but its good practice.
