gas guage on 1996 jimmy with v6 vortex engine

My gas gas on my 1996 jimmy seems to work ok when over half full but under half full it goes up and down. Mechanic said gas float? Regulator? Forget what its called needs replaced and that its in fuel pump so fuel pump has to be replaced is this true.
