Anytime i put gas in my 95 jimmy i get bad fumes for about 10-20 minutes then it goes away. Doesnt matter if i put $10 worth of gas or i fill it. I've checked the tank all the lines and the filler neck and cant find a leak anywhere. Is there anything else i should check?

Fuel smell when you fill your GMC Sierra

Jimmy

I had the same problem. I could smell fuel only when I filled my tank to the top. It took me a while but I discovered the seal around the sending unit located on the top of the fuel tank of my 2010 Sierra was leaking, causing the fuel smell. I just replaced the O ring seal and retainer ring and when I filled the tank, it leaked around the seal again. Before I reinstalled the fuel pump assembly back in the tank I noticed that the plastic lip that sits on the O ring seal had several cracks in the plastic and may be the reason why the seal was no longer effective. This may be the cause of your gas smell.

my 1993 gmc jimmy has the same issue, its just the way it vents so you dont build too much pressure up

Replace gas cap (that has a new cap seal) or just clean the fuel filler neck where the gas cap seal sits. Most of these vehicles rely on building a vacuum in the tank to keep the fumes from getting out. The gas cap seal is usually the main culprit when it comes to fuel odor upon exiting the vehicle. Otherwise you will have to research your vacuum line routing or upper tank (fuel pump) seal.

My "service engine soon" light came on and I found a good gas cap seal on an old cap to replace it and the light went out next trip.

(yay)
