2009 GMC Z71 ext cab 150,000 km. I have had this problem for a couple of years now, you turn the key, get a click, then silence, I had the battery and starter replaced, checked and cleaned battery cables, jumper-ed the negative battery post to the motor block and nothing seems to help, it did it again about a month ago, boosting doesn't help, sometimes it will start in the morning and sometimes it won't, now it starts anytime I try, I have not changed anything this time, getting very angry at this truck.

Did you try starting it in Neutral? Maybe something with shifter and transmission connection. What about the key and Ignition Immoblizer Module.PCM issues or corrosion in a connecton that is part of the starting system I am just throwing these things out there maybe you thought of these already.

I tried that, just get a loud click. starter is new with less than 20,000 KM, another new battery, connected booster cable from battery negative to the motor, tried boosting with no luck, left it at repair shop, mechanic says it works fine, told him to leave it outside, seems to work ok if outside temperature is warm, he checked the connections on starter and says they are clean, next, he will check the cable from battery down to starter for corrosion at both ends and do a resistance check of the cable, if he cannot find anything, I told him to put the old starter on, I checked it after replacing and found the connections all corroded up, took a drill with a wire wheel and cleaned them all ok, after doing that, it works good.

still does it, mechanic found nothing wrong, last couple of days it started ok, seems to be when temperature is below freezing, tried starting in neutral but still does it, next time I will verify that it is the starter solenoid that I hear, sure sounds like it but I need to be sure.

Did you put your Old starter back on? You may of got a lemon new starter? Ya I know we think the stuff is new there should be no issues but crap happens.

I had a similar problem. Replaced starter, solenoid was good. checked all connections. Trouble turned out to be the neutral switch.

I took the engine ground stud out and cleaned it with a wire brush, it is located on the engine and is easy to find, I also ran a ground strap from the ground on the fire wall that drops down to the engine, I ran it back to the engine ground stud. that was about 2 weeks ago, has worked ok since then, will post again if problem comes back.

almost a month has gone by with no repeat of the problem, taking the ground stud out and cleaning it seems to be the fix, I am using the old starter now, $400 later, it seems I should not have gone near a garage.

it all seems to come down to the ground stud on the engine, I have not had any problem since I cleaned it, other than rust.
