has spark at plug but will not start....

Well hey everyone..i have a good one..I was going to work the other morning in my 95 gmc pickup when it kinda slowed down then started backfiring and cuttting out, then just died....It had a sootty smell...i replaced plug wires,distriber cap,roller cap,and coil...it has got good spark at plug but will not crank... Oh yes when it the catalytic converter got very hot ,it was fire red...help

soulds like a pluged cat. Remove pipe to manifold bolts and cause a exhaust leak (before the cat) and try to start.

got it running but it still misses and has a strong smell of gas...does it need the carberator worked on or adjusted...have the timing adjusted....
