Help for a none user friend

My friend Dan's 1996 Sierra need the distributor timing set at 0-2 deg BTDC and we can not find the wire to disconnect it from the computer so that we can put the engine just above 1000 rpm and use the scan tool to adjust the timing. Is it necessary to disconnect the wire from the distributor to the Computer?
