How can I can I increase my gas mileage on my GMC sierra?

I have a 2001 GMC sierra, 5.3 V8, 4-WD, SLT, extended cab, short bed truck. I want to increase the gas mileage on it. Could I just get a bigger tank if it would fit? What's the best thing to do?
 
a cold air intake will help slightly.. not much.. really their is nothing you can do short of dropping the 4.8l motor in that is going to make a damn with gas mileage.. and the 4.8l only gets 3-4 mpg better
 
generally speaking full size 4x4 extended cab is not a light truck that is about the best combination of power and durability do you mean increase the distance between fill ups ? or more miles per gallon?
