I have a 01 gmc jimmy my check engine light has been on the second day we bought itI bought it from someone I don't know I fixed all the problems and already spent a fortune on it my friend told me there's a way I can reset the battery and drive a certain amount of miles and be able to pass before the light comes on does anyone know how many miles you have to drive?
I have had the mechanic scan the car several times

Disconnecting the battery will turn off the light but the memory in the computer will still store the codes that have not been repaired. It's not the amount of miles you drive before the light comes back on it's the number of times you start the vehicle.

take it to a GM shop.. they'll do a diagnostic for between $10 and $30.. this will tell you exactly why the light is on.. and well from there fix the problem.. most likely it's a burnt up O2 sensor

Before spending any money, did you have an OBD sensor attached so that the codes can be read to see why the check engine light is on ??? This is done free at most auto parts stores..............disconnecting the battery MAY cause the light to go off, but does not repair the problem

Have the Jimmy scanned for the DTC codes so you can address the issues that Jimmy has detected that needs to be looked at. It could be as simple as a bad Gas Cap that needs to be replaced or a faulty O2 sensor. Regardless get the jimmy scanned like at Auto Zone or Parts Source, they scan free of charge and can give you the recommendation to addressing the issue your jimmy has. :)

The check engine light will go out after the third start up if the problem has been resolved and will erase if self from the EMC history after 100 start up's without any recurring problem detected.
