How do I install a new CD player head unit into a GMC Savana work can?

I bought my father a new CD player for his 2008 GMC 3500 Savana work van. I purchased a Sony head unit and naturally, GMC had to go the messed up way by making it look as if it is built into the dash, although it obviously is not a one piece deal. So, what I need to know is, how does this differ from installing a head unit in like a Mitsubishi Eclipse or a Honda Civic? I see the size is different as it looks to be like the new Sony Unit is much smaller than that of the stock P.O.S. stereo. So, does anyone know how I would do this? Also, when my pops took it to the dealer awhile ago, they told him they could do it, but there was a chance it could crack the dash. Now, besides the point of one more reason why I hate General/Government Motors, why would they possibly produce such a hideous product that is in such a demand by the service worker of today, that has only 2 speakers (although it makes it look as if there are 2 in the back like his 2004 Savana and they just happen to not be there! Luck? I think not!) and not even as much as a cassette player (in the severely rare instance we still own cassettes) or CD player in the $28,000 shell with an engine? I wonder why they're destined to fail, as opposed to their belief of being too big to fail! Can you help me out with this? Thanks, in advance, to all that answer and if you are able to provide a "How-To" like link, that would be most appreciate as I have never done it in the past, but I do have an extensive professional audio background so I know a thing or two about audio/video equipment and the basic workings and uses of most products. Thanks!
