Regarding removing the trans pan, simply remove the two rear mount nuts and jack up the trans about an inch or two. The pan comes off much more easily. No need to completely remove the cross beam. When changing the filter, and make sure the old grommet comes out with the filter neck. If you get two of them up there, they will interfere with the pan installation.
This may also me a good time for you to replace the transmission mount since there been there since 1993 and must be worn by now. Also when reinstalling the transmission pan, make sure you don't damage the shift solenoid or there wire leads. The solenoids are common to brake when hit by the transmission pan when you go to reinstall everything.
