I have tried turning the wheel both directions which is locked in place as well. The automatic shift lever will not move. I gave the battery a quick charge which wasn't low. All to no avail.
Thanks

I have ran into this problems a few times did you try a different key? sometimes the keys wear out so bad that the teeth/steps on the key itself are worn rounded or almost completely gone and is like inserting a different key in the ignition. Another possibility is that the ignition tumbler is dry or damage I would try spraying wd 40 in the key slot and keep trying if it doesn't budge well you going to get a lock smith to replace the ignition tumbler/cylinder. Good luck

Ignition lock stuck

The problem could be a sticky tumbler in the ignition itself. Use TRI-FLO (with Teflon) to liberally flush the lock of any lint, dirt and debris, then follow with a lubricant like Lock-Shot by Starttec, Hornaday One shot, or lock Deicer with lubracant. Run your key in and out vigorously to work out any dirt and work in the lube. Now try turning the ignition. Repeat all steps several times (1. flush, 2. lube, 3. massage tumblers with key, 4. attempt to turn lock...). If this still does not fix issue, suspect faulty ignition switch. Remove and replace igntion switch. :(

This problem is not as complicated as it may seem. A lock smith would come over, lube up the cylinder, knock on the key so that it got shoved harder into the ignition, and then turn it. The ultimate problem is with your tumblers and you will need to buy a new cylinder in order to prevent this from ever happening again. From what I understand, wear and tear over the years disables ignition cylinders and the keys that go with them and they need to be replaced.

So, if you haven't already fixed the problem or sent the car off to a mechanic, just try giving the key a light tap with a pliers or screwdriver so that it is shoved a bit farther into the cylinder. Then go buy a new ignition lock, they are fairly easy to replace once you get the cylinder moving.

Just play with the steering wheel and the key after you spray it with TRI-FLO (with Teflon), then follow with a lubricant like One shot or Lock deicer with lubricant. Good luck. :D
