Ignition problem?

I just bought a 1992 Jimmy, car started w/ no problems for last few days until today I tried & it wouldnt turn over, even when I tried jumping it. I go get a new battery & it starts right up, but then they key gets locked in the on position & will not turn the motor off. Only way I was able to get they key out was turn it some more, which caused the gears to grind, but would loosen the key from the ignition. At this point the vehicle would still stay on, but I could then pull the ignition back to turn off the motor. Im no expert, but I've never had this happen to me, so what the hell causes this & how do I fix it? If I was to pay someone to fix this, what's the most I should pay?

sounds like the key cylinder is sticking a bit, these 92 jimmys are mostly mechanical. try replacing the key cylinder first, they are cheap anyways.
