Installing a Double Din Pioneer

Hi, this is my first post so I apologize if this has been said elsewhere, but I cannot find it anywhere on this site. I bought a Pioneer 3300BT for my 2002 Envoy and when I went to buy a harness, the guy at Futureshop told me that I need the $140 harness because the car has Bose speakers and OnStar. I was wondering if there is a way to use a different harness and if it would affect the door chime and warning lamps like the guy told me, or if its just a sales pitch. So far every place I've called in my city is asking for about $150 for the harness. Any input/advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

He didn't steer you wrong. It's not just a harness, it's also a little black box that accesses the databus which the computer uses to communicate to all the different electronic modules in the truck. Either use the adapter or rewire the whole thing from scratch, but then you'd lose Onstar, chimes and such.
