its time to admit defeat..help needed

I'm at my end..I feel like I'm beating a dead horse. .I have a 97 Gmc 1500 5.7 rear wheel drive. Problem im having is my third brake light doesn't work, overhead dome light doesn't work and my cargo light doesn't work. If I turn the light switch dimmer the lights at the doors come on. New brake switch. Lights dont come on when door is opened just by the dinner switch. I noticed an orange wire on the drivers side under the door threshold that was stripped back a little bit. Last owner had a hot wore from the door switch tired into it to make the overhead done light work. . Any ideas on where to start with this mess. .all info or help greatly accepted.

Anyone..anyone at all have any ideas??? And now today my son brings the truck home and said the truck acts like it has the brakes on while he's trying to drive it. . So I plan another day to work on this beast after sleeping for the hours and working another 18 hour shift. ... and it pours down rain got to get a garage or Pole barn built. .

Maybe try your 1500 forum , this is jimmy forum... Maybe a known flaw in just 1500's and not jimmy's
