My 95 jimmy will make a whirring noise after I drive for a short distance. this noise will slow down as I do and when I stop it sounds like the 4wd is engaged but not all the way. If I put the truck in park and let off the brake , wait a moment or two then put the truck in drive the noise will not happen again unless I turn off the ignition and then restart the truck and drive awhile again. If I turn on the 4hi it will go away but when I take it out of 4hi the noise will return a short time later again. Stop the truck ,put it in park let off brake wait a minute put it back in drive and I am good to go again with no more noise. Any ideas would be very appreciated Please?

Jimmy 4wheel drive trouble

To some of you having the problem with your 4wd like I was, Check your vacuum port on the transfer case and make sure your vacuum plug is on it the right way. This was my problem the vac plug was not on the vac port the right way. I put it back on the way it should be and my problem was solved

Good that you solved it.

There are 2 different kind of 4-wheel systems used in the Jimmy's. Mine is a '99 SLT, it has a all electric/electronic system, no vacuum pump/line (like the ones leaking below the battery tray).

Dealer said the electric ones are less likely to fail, however, the vacuum ones are easier to repair, usually just by replacing the vacuum lines.

Greetings!
