Hello, I'm new to this forum, but I'm certainly not new to Sierras (sorry for the long first post). I bought a 2000 xcab Z-71 new and it was a great truck. I treated it well and it returned the favor. My dad and granddad have always had GMC trucks and they've always lasted well. Well, to make a long story short I got married, changed jobs, ended up with a company truck to commute in and a baby at home. It was time to get rid of the Sierra. At the same time my dad was looking for a truck like mine. His '88 Sierra was showing it's age and he had to drive everyday. So we ended up with a little sale and swap. I've had the '88 K1500 for a couple of years now. It's got the wonderful no prime GM paint and peel look, but for hauling wood, yard work, and dump visits it's great. For a long time now it's had a little puff of smoke when it's cranked and then it went away after a few minutes. Always kept fresh oil in it because it changed itself. Now finally, to my question. Here lately, I've had to park the truck. When it runs long enough to get the engine warm I get smoke from the exhaust pipe and I don't mean out the exhaust pipe. The exhaust pipe itself is smoking, smells like burning oil, and there is oil dripping out from the three bolts where the exhaust manifold connects to the downpipes on the passengers side. It'll fill the engine bay quickly with smoke. I've have looked it over very closely. There are no leaks that I can see from around the block or valve covers. I wiped the oil off the exhaust bolts Saturday and then cranked the truck. In just a few moments oil was back dripping from the bolts, as though it was coming through the exhaust and the connection to the downpipe. I pulled the valve cover and oil poured everywhere. It seems like the back oil drain was clogged. I got it all cleaned out and replaced the valve cover. Saturday evening and this evening I cranked the truck and let it run a few minutes and it still smoked (even after I rinsed what had spilled on Saturday). The smoke is rising off the surface of the exhaust pipe itself and smells like burning oil. I'm sure it's not a leak from the block because I see no oil running along the exhaust down to this point. The truck has 196,000 plus miles on it. I know I need to run a compression test, but it still feels as strong as it did before and the exhaust (single in/dual out Flowmaster 40 still sounds really healthy). Now I'm afraid the oil will catch fire and can't drive the truck until I figure this out. Suggestions? Anyone ever seen the exhaust pipe itself smoke? Is there oil getting into the exhaust ports and possibly sitting in the exhaust pipe? Thanks for any ideas, CannonRead more at http://gmcowners.com/gmc-forum/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=2&kcplink=1
