My Transmission is stuck in second gear

I have a 2001 Sierra 1500 5.3, 4 wheel drive and my it won't shift out of second gear unless i turn the truck off. I notice it does that after i have been on the highway for a while. And its an automatic. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be or do i need a rebuild? I am just trying to avoid rebuilding it to figure out that it was something simple. thanks Danny...

No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM

Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST. This guide is meant for problems that do not show up as PCM codes (like shift A&B solenoid failures, for example).

Keep me posted and the repair should not be more then $200.00 with the transmission oil and filter changed.

It starts out in second gear. When i shut the truck off it will go into first again. But when i drive and it shifts into second, it will stay in second. And your right i got it stuck in 3rd twice.. Thanks i'll keep you posted
