looking for early to mid nineties.
are they ok used SUV to buy?
I like their design.
Don't like the new ones cause can't afford it and also too round.
also, is jimmy or s10 considered compact or midsized suv?

Hello, you can look at some websites like Ford (flex) and Chevy (equinox) or GMC (acadia) but all mid size SUV's will be expensive. You might want to try Hyundia or KIA some of their mid size SUV's are assembled in america. Good Luck

buy a mitsubishi montero or toyota 4 runner.
GMC s10s and or jimmys (grandma's car) suck, they don't last long.
it was probably made on friday or on a monday!
Friday is when workers don't give a crap and just throw parts together waiting for their checks.
Or it was made on a monday when workers are coming off a hangover and usually just go though the motions at work. IE stuff is put together crappy!!!!

Guess machkman has not been around the Montero's and 4 Runners enough or owned one.

1993 Motero's TROUBLE SPOTS:

One of the most common problems with the Motero's in the early 90's, 92-92 bolt securing the crankshaft pulley would sheered off or came out while driving.

Corrosion just below the main frame by the front right door.

Dashboard lights: The check-engine light may come on when the vehicle is driven at wide-open throttle. (1997)

Manual transmission: Hard shifting, gear clash, may come from the manual transmission due to a failure of the first-second gear synchronizers, while screeching noises are due to failed second-third synchros. (1992-95)

Paint/body: Paint on the roof rack fades and peels. (1992-93)

Steering problems: Shudder while cornering may be minimized by adding Mitsubishi Limited Slip Differential Additive to the rear differential. (1997)

Vehicle noise: Popping noise during slow speed maneuvers may be caused by the torsion bar hitting the frame. (1992-96)

1993 Toyota 4 Runner TROUBLE SPOTS:

Automatic transmission: Weak springs inside the transmission can cause delay when shifting from park-to-reverse or neutral-to-reverse. (1990-95)

Clutch: A leaking or damaged direct clutch in the transfer case causes a slip or chatter on acceleration. (1990-92)

Clutch: Because of clutch judder, the pressure plate and disc were enlarged (from 9.00 in. to 9.5 in. diameter) for 4x4 models. (1990-94)

Exhaust system: In compliance with emission control regulations, the oxygen sensor should be replaced at 80,000 miles. (1993-94)

Oil consumption: Excessive oil consumption caused by sludge buildup on the cylinder heads. Company is extending warranty. (1993-95)

1993 Jimmy / Blazer TROUBLE SPOTS:

Automatic transmission: TH-700-R4 automatic transmissions may shift late or not upshift at all. The problem is a stuck throttle valve inside the transmission. (1990-92)

Dashboard lights: The oil pressure gauge may read high, move erratically, or not work because the oil pressure sensor is defective. (1990-93)

Dashboard lights: ABS system problems include false codes, a warning light that stays on, or speed sensor malfunctions. (1990-91)

Engine knock: Engine knock when the 4.3-liter engine is started can be eliminated by using an oil filter with a check valve. If this does not work, GM has revised PROMs for the computers and will even replace the main bearings. (1990-94)

Engine knock: Continued engine knock on 4.3-liter engines during acceleration or climbing a grade has been addressed by at least 15 PROM revisions due to carbon buildup on the pistons. (1992)

Personally if funds are tight, you may want to lean towards the Jimmy/Blazer, there parts are still interchangeable to new parts that at out on the newer Jimmy's and blazer and you can pick up almost any parts you need at Auto Zone, Parts Source or NAPA and to work in them is forgiving as to you can use common tools unlike the other two mentioned. If you do end up picking up a Jimmy/blazer, make sure it's a 1993 or newer W engine. That's when they came out with the balance shaft on the CAM to keep the engine vibration down.

AS you can see all have problems, it a mater on how much you can and want to spend on maintaining your ride. Here is a link that you can use to retrieve your own DTC codes on a ODB1 system for your Jimmy/Blazer (1990-1995) http://www.troublecodes.net/GM/ if your good with tools and like to keep it running 100%.

I my self have a 1996 with a HP tuner to keep it running 110% but it does take time and lot's of money so treat it as a hobby. For anyone out there who want to play with HP Tuner for there 1996-1997 Jimmy/Blazer, it's a nightmare cause your going to have to use a 1998 or newer. The 1996/1997 was a bread on there own almost like a 1995 off spring with two processor in side the ECM casing, a 1998 can be installed with a few of the connection pins modified and after that's done. Just do a custom tune on the ECM for the best performance tune you'll like. OBD1 system is just a custom chip burned to your preference, so have a few made out to swap out your preference. :D

Good luck and hope you find your dream truck, I have seen lot's of the old school Jimmy's / Blazer for for under $1000.00 and is a much better shape then the newer ones. Look around and before you buy any one of the three SUV's mentioned above, inspect the brake and fuel lines. All three are will have corrosion problem along the frame rail just in front of the rear wheels. That should help you get the price down or get you to skip the SUV and keep looking.
