Well it's been awhile since I was here. LOL. But the wife and I went out and sold our 11 Sierra with the 4.8 litre engine and bought a new 2015 GMC Sierra SLE with the infamous 5.3 litre engine in it.

Anyway long story short. I was in the GM dealer the other day getting the brakes checked for another problem and I ended up speaking to the head mechanic for their shop. I told him about my preference for the 4.8 litre engine and he told me all the great things about the 5.3 anyway, when I asked him about the excessive oil consumption the engine was famous for he told me that it was within tolerances for this engine to use a litre of oil every 3500 kilometres (or 2174 miles).

I then asked him where the oil went and he told me it was used to cool the bore. I didn't realise gas engines required the bore to be cooled with oil but thought that this might be because of the AFMS system shutting off 4 cylinders but still thought it odd.

So, I took his word at face value and checked my oil today at 3595 Km's only to discover I was down around a litre of oil.

So here's the question. Was I sold a bill of goods about the bore cooling and is this amount of engine oil being consumed above normal?

Thanks in advance
F.O.G.
