Hello, my name is Tim, I own a 95 Sierra Z71. It's getting a little long in tooth, and needing some love. I thought I'd join to get some insight on doing repairs. I'm a halfassed mechanic, but not a pro by any means. Next week I have to replace the pinion seal and transfer case output shaft seal. Any issues I should be concerned with?

Just match mark your drive shaft and yoke and since your working in that area, might as well replace your u joint and read differential fluid.

Good luck and stay safe. Post back on your project and don't forget to lube the new seals before placing the yoke back in place. :D

ok this is what you need to do so you won't have to rebuild the rear end next week.

Mark and remove drive shaft (replace u joint only if needed) Next this is the importan part. Take a prick punch and mark the pinon (the part the nut screws to) next mark the nut in line where you marked the pinon so the two holes line up. Then remove nut and also yoke (a hammer usually will get the yoke off) replace seal reinstall yoke and then the nut. now tighen nut till there is no free play. then line up your two marks to put the pinon preload back to where it was.

also remove and clean the rear end vent becaues if it's cloged you will just blow the seal again.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice, everyting went well. Of course, I didn't realize my lack of a 1 1/4" socket until I removed the drive shaft....DOH!
