Hi guys,
1996 Yukon 5.7 liter Vortec V8
I have P0300 code: Random Misfire
Check all the wires and find two cylinders are getting no spark. (cylinders 2 & 8)
Spark Plugs: New
Checked the wires with ohm meter: Fine (but replaced with a new set anyway to be safe)
Checked the distributor cap (again with an ohm meter) Cylinder feeds all check with zero resistance.
The contacts in the cap had a bit of build up... not horrible... but a bit dirty so I lightly polished the contacts and rotor.
Still no spark at cylinders 2 & 8
Q 1. Checking the cap with the ohm meter should tell the truth as to whether the caps good or not shouldn't it? I really don't want to drop 75 bucks on a cap and rotor if it doesn't need it.
Q 2. Could this be the crank positioning sensor going bad?
The positioning sensor tells the coil (among other things) when to send a charge... correct?
I know the code says Random Misfire but it appears to be only cylinders 2 & 8 that are truly dead.
Can anyone clue me in on what I've missed or where to look next?
Thanks much!
