First of all Hi fellows, name is Dan I drive a 2000 GMC sierra 5.3L. Recently my truck has started giving me problems, the first being is my truck is overheating violently all the way to the red. The second is no hot air comes out the vents when I turn on my heater, which really sucks in winter time. I have replaced the thermostat and no go, which then made me replace the water pump also no go. Any ideas or advice on what could be causing would sure be helpful since it's my daily, thanks

I would try checking for air in the cooling system. ive had problems with my 01, same symptoms you describe, and it was the thermostat witch i replaced twice before everything was ok. and while i had the stat out i flushed the heater core with mineral spirits to clean all the gunk out..... hope this helps... good luck

Here is a write up on how to flush out your coolant. http://gmcowners.com/gmc-forum/showthread.php?t=15262
The issue is that the DexCool my have crystalized in your cooling system which can cause the issues your having. Try flushing out the coolant and replacing it with a new 50/50 mix of DexCool/Water.

Too much DexCool and the coolant will gel when it get's hot and to much water will make it boil over.

Be safe and keep us posted. ;)

I dont think it's the thermostat because I removed it and ran the truck without it and still overheated. I also removed the top radiator hose and no coolant was coming out of the radiator. Im going to to try Melson's suggestion tomorrow and see what happens, tnx again guys

I dont think it's the thermostat because I removed it and ran the truck without it and it was still showing the same symptoms. I also removed the upper radiator hose while running and it was bone dry no coolant passing thru. Im going to try Molson's suggestion tomorrow and see what happens. Tnx again guys

So I took my truck to the local firestone to get the coolant flushed with a professional machine. As soon as I mentioned it was overheating they refused to flush the coolant system and offered to diagnose the the truck, with me running out of ideas I agreed. In the end they said the problem was the water pump which I had barley replaced, and the worst part was the $70fee that came with it. They had also said their was no pressure in the system which made them believe the water pump is at fault.
Anyways I'm going to try and flush my self using Molson's suggestion, Tnx

Took the truck in to firestone so I could have it flushed with a professional machine. Once I mentioned it was overheating they refused to perform the flush and offered to diagnose. At the end they said my water pump was to blame, the very one I had just replaced, reason was because no pressure was in the system. They also charged me $70 for telling me the same things I already knew. I'm going to try Melson's suggestion and see what happens, Tnx guys
