There are a few things that can cause this issue and your going to have to bring it to the dealer to have it repaired. With out knowing the DTC codes, there's to many things to guess at. But it's going to most likely be throttle issues between the TPS and the gas pedal position having a conflict of reading to the ECM.

could this have happened from someone trying to tow it or doing it the wrong way?

It can if the transmission is damaged. Automatic transmission can not be towed for long period of time with out the transmission fluid running through the clutch packs and torque converter. There are sensors in the transmission that will command for reduced power if there is an issue with the transmission, your going to have to get your Sierra scanned to pin point what is causing your reduced power issue. There is just to many thing that can cause this and a waste of you time and money to chase the real issue when the DTC codes can get you to address the problem.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry to do this

Hello all- I am sorry to post on someone else thread but I cannot get a new damn thread started and the administrator will not answer me. Here is my question.

Thanks for looking and any help that can be given.

That being said here is synopsis - I bought a 1995 GMC 1500 Z71 Truck with 5.7 L engine, has 4 speed tranny in it (1-2-3-OD) Drove fine for a week then
after leaving work it wouldnt start. Put new battery in it and it started (turned out blow motor didnt shut off when I turned it off, now I know to it off when I turn truck off) After I put new battery in I went to pick up a washer and dryer, while driving home it would not shift out gear. (I think it was second gear about 3700 rpms at 40 mph) I went to drive it the next day to see if it continued this trend, however this time it starting jumping between gears and the speedometer would go crazy. So I did some research online and my uncle talked to a GM tech that he knew. We both came to the conclusion that it was the ignition switch. I changed that and am still having the same problems with it jumping gears. I am going to try and get a scanner to run on it.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated - I am on a limited budget and will have to do all work on my own.
