Hey everyone! Hope you all had a good Christmas!!
Anyways, I've had my 1998 GMC Sonoma SLT for about a month now. I've noticed that I'm getting really poor mileage.
Currently with 6 fuel ups, I'm averaging 10.2mpg.
I haven't had much time to check the engine, but I know that this is really bad!
Are there any certain areas I should be checking (spark plugs/ coils/ etc)? I'm accustomed to working on rotary engines, but I'm sure I could find my way around this engine! It's just so cold outside to go and blindly search

EDIT: I'm doing mostly city driving, and it's been snowing the last few days, so I understand that that will lead to more fuel consumption.

Start with the simple and clean your MAF sensor and replace your thermostat. Make sure your running the OEM temp of 195' degrees, that's what the PCM was programed to run it's best and the colder the engine reading is the worst the fuel consumption is.

Good luck and keep us posted. ;)

Update:
I've been away with work the last few months and haven't had time to fix my problem. Gonna go grab a beer and get this started ;)

what and where is the maf sensor?

MAF sensor is the Mass Air Flow sensor. It measures the amount of air entering your engine, regulating the air/ fuel mixture. If dirty/ broken, it can cause false readings making your engine dump in either too much (rich) or too little (lean) gas, thus affecting fuel consumption. If I had a camera, I'd take a pic... It's located between the air intake and the accordion tube.

dont worry about the coils unless you need to change them. plugs is alwasy a good idea and some simple things too liek air filter. clean the throttle body
