My 2000 Sierra needs a new cat system. A local garage wants to charge $995.00 (american) for the entire "Y" pipe assembly w/seals. This seems awfully high or is it in the ballpark? Thank you.

Sounds about right since your have both left and right Pre Catalytic Converters. I am surprised that you need that part replaced, unless your cat's have gone bad. The exhaust pipes are made of stainless steel and the more common part of the system to go bad would be after the secondary Catalytic Converter.

Call around first and see if you can find a custom exhaust shop that can help you with your exhaust. Keep me posted, just looking out for you there if you may just have a exhaust flange bolt that went bad and causing excessive exhaust noise and leak.

Bank 1 is malfuntioning. As you know, with 324,000 miles and it being the original cat system, it was only a matter of time. I checked around to see about putting on universal cats, but most say to use direct fit units, because the universals will cause it to code again. ?? Don't know which way to go.

If you can find a speed shop there that can install a high flow cat and re program your PCM to take the new high flow cat, that would be great. Other then that you can try http://www.magnaflow.com/ and see if they have a Cat that would be compatible to your's that will not set off a code.

Most of the high flow cats from Magnaflow was just a bolt on without any issues when ordered for the Vehicle in questioned. It's what i also did to my Jimmy and has great luck with it and not have to change any setting to my PCM for the high flow cat Manaflow sent, then again the custom exhaust shop was a Magnaflow sponsored shop so they got alot of information readily for any exhaust needed made. ;)

When I get everything straightened out, with Magnaflow or not, should I still take it to a dyno shop to reprogram the PCM?

You should be fine, without any re-tuning with the new catalytic converter as long you order the Cat's for your Sierra's application. Just give Magnaflow a call and talk to there Tech's. If you do decide to re program your PCM, save some money and go with http://www.pcmforless.com/.

Just let them know what mods you have done and i believe there tune is for life as to any changes you need made. Mods as to cold air intake and exhaust modified like your doing and anything else as in cam changes.

Dyno tuning is simple, but the cost of the machine is what brings the price up. Good luck and keep me posted, with the PCM you'll gt another 25 HP to the rear wheel with your high flow cats.
