I have a 2000 Sierra 1500 5.3, I plan to use it to haul my racecar.

The truck is all stock, what ball mount height/drop should I use?

What brand brake controllers are decent and which ones do I stay away from?

And how do you know if you have the tow/haul option installed? When I push in the button, no light comes on my dash, so either A. the light might be burnt out B. it was not installed on my truck.

Thank you.

Bruce

I think the first thing I would do is confirm your truck can safely tow (and stop) the load - ie, trailer, car, equipment, you and your passengers.

as far as ball height - I'd choose a model that allows the trailer to be as level as I could get it.... gonna tow better that way.

I've had good luck with a Tekonsha 90195 - P3. easy to install and easy to use.

Let me ask this question, how do I know if my truck came with a towing package?

Just because it has the hitch and the trailer plug, does that classify it to have a towing package?

not necessarily. a quick interweb search shows the towing capacity is between 3900 and 9500 lbs depending on the engine, transmission and rearend gearing.

You can get help figuring out the right towing package equipment for your Sierra by typing in the year, make, & model at ReeseHitches.com. They've got a good selection of electric brake controllers there too.
