I have a 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE. Is there anyway to keep my truck running when I remote start it? After 10 minutes the truck shuts off. I'm trying to defrost the glass before I hop in to drive but 10 minutes doesn't cut it.

Before the minutes are up, hit the start button again and it will give you another 10. (i.e. you re-hit the start button at 8 min, it will add an additional 10, so you'll have a total of 18 min.)

I believe this is in the owner's manual.

Hope that helps.

Carlos32,
The engine will continue to run for 10 minutes. Repeat the steps for a 10-minute time extension. Remote start can be extended only once. You can find this information in your owner's manual on page 1-9. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me.

This has been a huge sticking point with my wife on our new vehicle. We recently purchased a 2012 Acadia with the factory remote start. The inability for the owner to adjust the run time of the vehicle to their preference based on the climate they live in is something I do not understand. I have been putting after marked starters in my vehicles for years and have always been able to program them to whatever time I see fit. We live in a northern climate and on subzero days the 10 minute start time (even if you remember to restart it the second time) is not always enough to completely warm the interior of that big vehicle. To say nothing of De-icing a windshield covered with snow. It seems like it would be a simple thing for GM to allow the owner to set this time to their personal preference. My wife is adamant that the next vehicle will either have this option or will be purchased without the factory starter so an aftermarket one can be installed in its place. I do hope that GM changes this policy allows for the owners to alter the factory preset timers.

Just our of curiosity, has there been any indication that GM is acting on this? It is nearing time for me to replace my Sierra. I am wondering if the same issue still exists or if they have fixed this yet. It is very likely to affect my purchasing decision.

Hello jland800,

I do see that we have forwarded your feedback to the appropriate group within our organization. I don’t believe the suggestion has made it into production vehicles yet. The appropriate team does have your feedback and may be working on implementing this in future vehicles. We are always instituting new technology though, and if your vehicle is equipped with remote start and OnStar, the RemoteLink mobile app allows you to start your vehicle from your phone. Here is some additional information about the RemoteLink app: https://www.onstar.com/web/portal/connectionsexplore?tab=2&g=1

I would think that the 10 minute time limit is programed into the vehicles computer. With that in mind could that time be easily reprogrammed, just a thought.

We actually do have the Remote link app loaded on my phone and use it frequently. It however suffers from the same 10 minute run time limitation with only one restart. With this being one of the coldest winters we have had in Michigan in many years. My wife has become increasingly agitated on this subject. It's a pity because it has really colored her opinion of an otherwise fine vehicle. Again, giving the owner the ability to set there own run time should be a simple software issue and should not even add significant cost to General Motors. I really hope this is addressed before we purchase the next vehicle. It will be the first question she asks the dealer and if the wrong answer is given, she will walk away for sure.

okay....going to look for a new truck next month. Has GM done anything to address this issue or am I shopping elsewhere?

I know that for big trucks in some states it is illegal to idle for more that 5 minutes. It is an EPA thing and has caused a big problem for over the road truckers. They have had to install APU or large battery packs in order to keep heat and A/C going for overnight parking to keep the cab livable. It is a huge ticket in California for getting caught extended idling. I am sure with the push for start/stop to be incorporated in new cars the issue of extended idling will also be looked at.

Guess not. Ford builds nice trucks too and they responded to customer requests and made the system programmable by the end use to run up to 15 minutes per cycle. While this is not my only deciding factor, I am disappointed that GM has decided to ignore their customers requests on something that would have cost them nothing more than a software change. For the first time in 15 years I am considering a non GM product.

I nearly forgot about this topic after I made my purchase but I thought an update was in order as my wife is ready to replace the Acadia. I did purchase my new truck, a Ford F-150. It has been a great truck and the run time is bit more acceptable. My wife is now ready to purchase her next vehicle and as GM seems reluctant to offer the ability for the end use (owner) to make this decision for themselves, she has selected the Ford Explorer for her next vehicle as it can be made to run for 35 minutes with its restart.

No change

Got a 2016 Sierra 1500. NO changes made. Still the 2, 10 minute remote start options only.

I tri that on my 2014 and when I hit the remote again it shut it off did not add time

I am tired of the measly 10 minute run time too. I will be buying a new truck soon. I have owned GMC my whole life but maybe it's time to try a Ford for the first time.
