First off hello everyone. I have only owned 2 GMC’s in my time. Not stupid, but not super mechanic smart. I have done plenty of work to vehicles threw out my life. I could use my hand held through some things
I just picked up a 2001 GMC 2500. Which has a problem with idle right after start up. It is missing the air filter housing, so I kind of suspect possible issues with air to fuel ratio due to this. What do you think ? Possible PCV, vacuum leak, clogged injectors? I should add it cold AF outside right now so I’m not going out to work on it till it warms up outside a bit
The first time I fired it up cold. It fired right up then the RPM’s jumped way up, then it kept wanting to die, so I was able to use the throttle to keep it running till it warmed up. Today at -2 degrees it didn’t want to start even though the engine was turning over. It took 5 attempts to get it running, the RPM’s didn’t jump up this time, and I had to nurse it with the throttle to get it not to die and warm up
Once it’s warmed up it idles right under 1000RPM runs strong, shifts smooth… and it seems to run fine.

I don’t want to throw parts at it, I’m definitely on a low budget. So any expert help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance
