hey guys, im new here to the boards. i have a 2000 jimmy and it keeps throwing codes for the secondary air injection (p0410-secondary air injection system). the air pump and inlet/outlet tubes were replaced recently and even with the code present i can hear the pump working on start up when the hood is open and the fuse is ok, that was the first thing i checked. also the gas mileage is shit! im getting 16mpg on the highway and it had a tune up about 15000 miles ago with all ac delco parts (cap rotor plugs wires and coil) i also replaced the MAF about a year ago.

Here's the story on the P0410 for other who have not experance this yet.

The AIR pump adds air to the exhaust stream to lower emissions. It does this by taking in outside air and pumping it through two one-way check valves into each bank of the exhaust.

About 90% of the time that this code is set, the one-way check valves have worn out or failed and allow water (which occurs naturally in the exhaust) back into the pump. In any cold climate, especially in the northeast with higher humidity, this water may be more excessive. The water partially fills the AIR pump, it can then freeze. When the PCM commands the pump on, if the pump is frozen it cannot turn, thus overloading the circuit and "popping" the fuse.

As far as the location of the fuse, it is in the right front fender well beside the battery, and in front of the horn there.

Sometimes replacing the fuse will fix all your problems and you are all set until next winter when it all happens again.

Also, sometimes water is allowed to enter the pump through the intake side of the system (just a 5/8" hose behind the fan shroud) and ruins the system that way. -I'll talk about that in a moment.

GM says that when this system failure occurs due to water intrusion, the pump MUST be replaced. I have had decent luck just blowing the pump out with direct power provided by a test bettery out of the vehicle, and saving the people money

GM has also released a remote air intake kit that includes a longer 5/8" hose, a control solenoid, and a one-way check valve to eliminate most possibility of water intrusion.

Like I said before, sometimes just blowing out the motor and replacing the fuse will solve your problem. BUT, to truly repair the problem correctly the AIR pump, the fuse, and the exhaust check valves must be replaced, and the remote air intake kit must be installed.

Here in the north it is a BIG problem, and poeple have replaced at least 100 AIR pumps in the last 2 years or so.

If your vehicle is still under warranty, then you are lucky. --> The exhaust check valves usually wear out after 3-4 years thus, putting most vehicles out of warranty coverage.

Hope this explains the infamous (at least here in the north) P0410.

As for your Jimmy with the fuse beging good and pump working, inspect the check valves and replace if wornout.

As for your bad gas milage, replace your thermostat with a new one and at least 180" or the stock at 195". Anything colder will give you poor gas mailage, unless you have tuned your PCM to run the engine colder. :D

yes i know all about that as i am a mechanic and i have read the whole write up about the water getting into the pump. the air pump hoses and check valves and fuse have been replaced yet the code keeps coming up. i have double checked the fuse and even when the code is present i have started the truck and listened to the air pump start and suck air into the inlet hose.

I had this problem on a '03 Blazer that the dealership had replaced the pump and inlet hose kit, it still set the code. Long story shot they hooked the ink=let hose to the outlet of the pump, and the outlet hose to the inlet on the pump. I reversed the hoses and have had no more problems with it.
So I would check that it may be that simple.:)

Check the fuse I between battery an fender, make sure vacuum line to diverter solenoid has vacuum, check the diverted solenoid works.. Check that when the diverted valve has vacuum it allows air to flow though.. Check air pump motor operates., check that air can flow to the manifold though check valves but not from manifold to the air pump... In my situation I had a broken vacuum line, a stuck solenoid , a burnt out air pump , both check valves bad ..
