somesight on towing ability for 99sierra 4.3 auto trans.

I own a 99sierra 4.3 auto trans. Im purchasing a mobile detailing trailer, its an open trailer not an enclosed. My dad has an 03 sierra 4.3l, and he pulls his ladscaping trailer with it, but recently blew out his tranny. I dont want the same thing to happen to me. My question is what can I do to prevent that from happening, i was told to change out the gears on the rear end. Any help and advise would be appreciated.
