1999 GMC Jimmy SLS 4.3L v6 2door 4x4, so my vehicles been fine up until now, somthing broke and my vehicle wouldnt start, i thought it was the starter so i changed it, then it still wouldnt start, when you turn the key everything still turns on an works except the starter when you turn it over, so i have it hard wired to a switch in the cab, my problem is on my vehicle you have to put your foot on the break to take it out of park, that part broke because you no longer need to do that to take it out of park, what part would that be and how hard is it to change? could that be why my starter wont engage? any help would be greatly appreicated

Sounds ( to me ) like the original problem was in the starer switch that's at the bottom
of the steering column . I think the contacts get worn or something like that.
If you search you should find some threads on it.

As for the brake / park thing , I'm like you , all I know is my jimmy needs to be running in order to shift gears but I don't know what triggers its release.

You should take a look at your neutral safety switch. try to start your car in neutral and see if that works. The safety neutral switch prevents the vehicle from being started in gear to avoid a sudde unexpected take-off. If its not functioning properly then maybe thats why you have starting problems. I'm not entirely sure where its located but I would assume the tranny. it shouldn't be a big deal to change.
