i have a new truck, a 1987 gmc sierra R2500. I noticed that the differential cover had a giant hole in it. i took it out and noticed that one of the spider gears was out of its place and smashed into 3 parts. can anyone tell me how could that even happen? and where i could replace the spider gear? thanks

It's called dynamite your rear end, it happens to worn and lack of service to the rear end of having low gear oil and contamination to the oil causing wear and one wheel burnouts.

Your Sierra being a 1987, your better off buying from a Salvage Yard to save you some money and i mean the whole rear axle assembly for $250.00. It fix your rear end, you might as well rebuild it. Rebuild it as to new bearings and axle and differential which will bring you over $1,500.00 and that's being conservative as i take it your going to do the work your self.

Sorry for the bad new friend.

rear end problems need HELP

so i bought a 2000 gmc sierra and since i have bought it i have had trouble with the rear end i talkd to a friend of mine who worked at GM for a while and he thinks he remembers a time that GM messed up the housing for the rear diff something about the casting of it was wrong has any one heard of anything like this

No. Any problems are likely from its prior use.

Btw - GM does not make the rear axles. The primary source has been AAM (American Axle and Manufacturing). If it has a locking rear differential (G80), that is supplied by Eaton Corp.

Both these companies products are very reliable, millions of them out there.
