Hey I have a 93 sierra 1500 that won't start with the key. It will bump start though. I have pulled the starter and it will turn with a battery hooked to the terminal. So I looked into it and thought it might be the neutral safety switch under the clutch pedal (sorry it is a 5 speed ) so I learned how to bypass that with a jumper wire across the plug . And still nothin so I didn more looking into it and decided to skip completely over the key and put a push button in it so I ran a wire from the battery terminal inside to a switch (momentary on push button ) then from the switch to the small connection on the starter and it still has nothing I am at a loss and don't know what it could be any help would be greatly appreciated and sorry for being so lengthy wanted to make sure I got all the details

i just replaced my starter. after 5 hours of trying to trouble shoot it by taking it off making sure everything was in visual working order, and then taking it in to get tested and it tested okay, put it back on nothing happened, got a new battery cable tired that nothing worked, then just got a new starter and put that on and it fired right up. they say when you test it, it will work because its not under any load, theres no motor for it to crank over. so if you took it in and it worked in the tester and not on the truck just grab you a new one for like 100 bucks and be good to go with it. dont forget to take your core back tho save you some money.

I do believe that it was just rebuilt the truck has been sitting for some time and I am trying to fix it

A few thoughts -
If your starter has 2 or more small wires on it you may have switched the terminals.

If you have a separate starter relay, you can bypass the relay with a jumper cable and send 12 volts to the starters only main cable... put it in Neutral with the clutch fully depressed & it should crank - If the starter does not crank when bypassed, then the only thing missing is a good ground.
To test the ground, use a pair of jumper cables& try grounding the starter case by connecting one end to the starter case & the other end to a good ground.

If you've noticed that the gauges are dancing, its usually a bad ground - the jumper cables will help with that problem too... at least for test reasons.

If you had the old starter tested, then its most likely the first problem. But if the old starter was not tested properly, your problem could be a bad starter relay, a faulty ignition switch, or simply a bad ground.

Check the grounding of the remote starter relay, & also check for a plug-in connector off the end of the steering column for corrosion.

You nailed it Flyboy it was a bad ground. It now starts and runs good. Working on doing general tune up stuff. plugs, wires, oil, oil filter, air filter, distributor cap and rotor button.
