Hello,I have a 1996 GMC Sonoma 2.2 How to take the starter out?I removed all bolts.back of starter hits the frame when trying to pull it out.I tried raising the engine still dont work.Seems the frame is in the way from the back of the starter to come out of transmission housing.I took it in to a garage shop to have it removed and replaced.I asked the machanic how to get it out?He replied only one way up then down. After they replaced the starter for $300 3 weeks later starter quit working again. No wantarnty.I need to get the starter out to have it checked if bad.Once in a while it will start up.Like a bad connection.Like the starter wires wasn't tight enough the first time.Is there a relay that causes the starter not to turn over?I hear a relay on the firewall click when tring to start it.Can't get to the selanoid without pulling the starter. The bolts ar out for the starter removel. The stater pulls out of the trans housing but not enough the frame is in the way to pull out any further.Does the engine need to be lifted up?

I bought a starter from auto zone.I tried removing the starter.Would not come out.I retighten the starter took in to a shop and had it fixed for $300 bucks sucked me dry. Then 3 weeks later the starter started getting bad connection like.Once in a while it would start. It's a brand new starter. The shop said it is not under warinty because,I didn't buy the starter from them.$300 included a new battery as well.So I got a new starter & Battery. My thinking is the shop didn't tighten the starter wires tight enough.I can't get to the silanode to check if the wires are tight. The starter must be pulled to be tooken in to be checked or replaced.Last time I tried to take the starter out.Spent hours no luck.Is why I had to take it in to a shop. Here I am again with the same problem.I don't want to spend another $300.The problem seems to be a simple one.How does the starter drop down? All bolts are out. When I try to pull the starter out of the transmission housing it will not come out all the way.The back of the starter hits the frame or engine frame carage.I tookin out the drivers side motor mount bolt and raised the engine up on the starter side. But,still not enough rook to clear the frame. The starter pulls & pushes in and out about 4 inches is all movement I got.I asked the machanic last time this happened.I said I tried for hours trying to drop the starter.Even raised the engine. How does it come out?Machanic replied:Up then down.Only one way it comes out.He said it's simple really.Well,This is a new one for me I must say.I worked on cars for many years off and on.This one gets me?

Is this GMC Sonoma Forum ?101 people viewed this page I see!I take it know one has ever installed a starter in a 96 GMC Sonoma!I guess if know one has ever installed a starter before here then the wrong place to ask I take it.Sounds like know one here has a answer. From 101 views!Sounds like this GMC Sonoma Forum isn't worth a shit!I'm sure I will get a reply now ha!

To bad he didn't wait for 102 views as I have the instructions for
removing a starter on a 96 Sonoma with a 2.2 engine right in front of
me.

How to drop a starter on a 96 GMC Sonoma 2.2?

For the #102 verwer a week later your the only responce sounds like a high traffic site for sure.............

I don't need 10 miles of instructions.I'm looking for someone that's done it?Sure online instruction can be optained.Don't help any for me.You may think you have the instruction in front of you?Doing it is two different things.
I never heard of anyone ever removing a motor mount just for a starter.
I tried that as well.Raised it up 4-5 inches didn't help any. Will not clear the frame. Is why I took it into a shop in the first place.Shop told me simple, raise the back of the starter up.Then down, it comes right out simple.Adding you must turn a certain way as well.Don't work not enough clearnce.Back of starter hit the frame.Front of starter is still inside the tranny housing.I need 2-3 more inches to clear that I don't see to have. All bolts, braket are removed. No luck.I hear it could be just a starter relay is this possable?Seems when it did start it seemed to have a 1-2 sec.delay before it started.Wondering if just a simple relay? The starter & battery is new 3 months old.I think before I attempt to pull the starter is to check the starter wires are all tight to the selinode and good ground. Then replace the starter relay. If that's not it then I will replace the ignition switch. if then same problem, starter time.
I'm asking how to drop the starter down after all the bolts is removed.
Some people say exhuast pipe, motor mount must be removed.Sounds like a big pain just for a simple starter job.
It's funny I been searching for a week now from different websites and google as well as utube.Seems no answers to be found for a 96 GMC 2.2 starter removel.

Try taking the wheel off, get a second hand, there's a piece of frame with three bolts like 2 feet long... remove it, unscrew the wires, take the 2 bolts holding the starter, remove starter (working your way out), clean wires terminal and make sure they are in good condition, install new starter (work your way in), tight bolts to hold starter, attach wires back again, put piece of frame back in place, put wheel back on and your'e set.

good luck, hopes it helps
