Hello All. I am a new guy to the forums, but, I have a GMC Suburban I bought on Craigslist for 500.00 I have had a slight problem that I hope someone can help me with. I had to replace the Intake Manifold Gaskets, and head gaskets. The truck started up fine, but after a day or so I got an SES light. Nothing seemed to be wrong with the truck so I continued to drive it. I took it to a friends house, and when I came out to start it, I got NOTHING. Nada, zippo, zilch. So, I figured starter. I got a new one, and the same. NOTHING. Bad ignition switch right? So, I put a new one in, and the SES light goes away. But, as I was driving it, I noticed that the anti-lock light, and the brake light come on from time to time. I drove it today, she started 3 times with no problems. I just took it to the store, and then same problem. I tried it and tried it. Nothing. I called the wife, and went back out, and got a half start. Then nothing. I waited for about three minutes, and as the wife drove up, it started. I am so frustrated right now. What am I missing? Thanks, and I like the forum so far.

Post me back the year of your suburban, and i'll see if i can help you.

Hello, oops, it is a 1997 suburban, 350, 4X4 1/2 ton.

Thanks' if there is a Auto Zone around your area, have them scan the Suburban for the DTC codes. They scan free of charge and we can go from there, just don't want to start making expensive guesses.

The only thing i can think of right now would be a bad ICM lead wire or the ICM it self is going bad. ICM (Ignition Control Module), there is an issue that the wire in the distributor would corrode after a few years due to condensation causing the connection to the ICM or the ICM to fail.

Keep me posted and Auto Zone also can check your ICM free of charge. Keep me posted.

Thanks. I have a neighbor who has the OBDII, so, I will see if I can borrow it. I am scared to drive the truck now, LOL

Did you do a crank relearn????

Ensure that your battery is fully charged before attempting the relearn procedure. Do not leave any battery charger or jumper cables attached to the battery. Close the hood completely. Some applications require that the doors remain closed during the procedure.
96-99 GM
1. Rotate the key to the start position to attempt to start the vehicle (the vehicle will not start).
Allow the key to return to the all position (same as if the vehicle would have started). The theft system light will flash (or stay lit) on the dash for approximately 10 minutes.
2. When the theft system telltale stops flashing (or turns oft) turn the key to the off position for 5 seconds and then attempt to start the vehicle. The vehicle should start on this cycle.
3. Once the vehicle is running, the password relearn is complete.

3. When the theft system telltale stops flashing (or turns off) turn the key to the off position for 5 seconds and then attempt to start the vehicle.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes.
5. On the next cycle of turning the ignition key from off to crank the vehicle should start
6. Once the vehicle is running, the password is learned and this completes the cycle.
7. Clear any DTC's with a scan tool if necessary. DTC history will be cleared after 100 ignition cycles.

I havent tried the crank relearn, because the battery wasnt disconnected that long, and I have never seen the theft/security light stay on. The Burbie started fine, first go after I replaced the ignition switch. Does it still need this?

Doesn't hurt to try anything right now without the DTC codes. ;)

Well, she started. I think the crank relearn is out. I dont see a security light at all when I turn the key on.
