2002 Sonoma Ext. SLS 4.3L 4WD (3-button)

When I push the button for 2HI, I can hear what sounds like the transfer case motor working (or trying to), the 2HI light flashes a few times, then stops and 4HI lights up again.

- sometimes after doing this, the truck will not go into gear at all and I have to push 4LO and while it's trying to switch, put it into drive to get the transmission to engage again (loudly)
- every once in a while, it will actually kick in to 2HI. This is rare, however.

The vacuum actuator under the battery and the cable from it both move easily. I'm going to take a look at the vacuum switch on the TC tomorrow, but I wouldn't even really have a clue what to look for anyway.

What do the experts here think? Motor, switch, or maybe something as simple as fluid levels?

Sometimes on the push button 4x4 the actual push button assembly in the dash goes bad. Check that. Do a search on youtube... I am sure there is info on how to check and change.

The buttons do what they're supposed to do. I got in it and futzed around with the buttons, trying to get it into 2WD, and now the TCCM clicks like crazy and I've blown two 20A ATC fuses (under the hood). Did I blow up my module?

Gonna go to the local wrecker here and see if I can find another one just to try it out. I have a sinking suspicion that it's the transfer case switch motor.

It was the transfer case motor. Replaced that, everything works fine.

What a stupid setup.
