Truck quit running a couple of weeks back due to bad ignition module. The plug that connects the stator in the distributor to the ignition module crumbled when I removed it, so decided to replace distributor. Set engine at TDC, removed old distributor and replaced with rebuilt one. Set distributor to approx position of old one and checked rotor position to confirm that rotor is pointing to the #1 post on distributor cap
Disconnected SET TIMING wire and attempted to crank engine. Would not crank and kept spitting back through TBI.
Pulled ALL the spark plugs and rotated engine through several times with a finger over #1 cylinder spark plug hole. As #1 cylinder advanced through the compression stroke, the 2nd timing mark on the harmonic balance would have already rotated past the timing tab.
According to a Chiltons manual and other sites on the 'net, the harmonic balance has two marks 90 degrees apart. When standing at the front of the truck and rotating the harmonic balance clockwise, the 2nd mark should be at the 0 (ZERO) point on the timing tab when #1 cylinder is at TDC. Apparently, this isn't happening with my truck.
Using a piece of copper wire stuck in the spark plug hole of #1 cylinder, the second timing mark has rotated 30 or 40 (or more) degrees past the timing tab when the piston reaches TDC.
Bad harmonic balance or am I overlooking something else here? Truck has a little over 303,000 miles on it and to my knowledge has the original HB.
