My girlfriend has an 01 Jimmy and a couple days ago she was heading out of town and as soon as she started going on the interstate on ramp it made a loud pop noise and then started a high pitched whine sound so she pulled over and called me. When I got out there and was messing with it I noticed that it will drive forward but the whine sound gets exceptionally louder and it has no reverse at all, just revs like it is in neutral. We ended up having it towed back home and the tow truck guy said he thought it was the transfer case. My question is could it actually just be the transfer case or is that a transmission issue? I've never owned or worked on a car that had a transfer case so I have no experience with them. I've been reading about the different symptoms but I can't find anything on google with the exact same symptoms. It will park and drive but no matter what there is that whine sound and it's definitely coming from the transmission/transfer case area.
