The proper way to show the ratio would be 4.06:1, or 3.08:1 etc.

This shows the number of turns of the driveshaft (4.06) to the number of turns of the wheels (1). 4.06 to 1

Hope this helps

So if my wheels turn more (4.08 to 1) I would get better gas milage then lets say 3.42 to 1. But my pulling power would not be as good as the 3.42.
I don't pull anything so the higher number would be better? (not counting resale)

The lowest first number SHOULD deliver better mileage as your rpm's are lower at a given speed, in high gear on the transmission. Typically, a higher first number is used for heavy duty and towing. If you want to come anywhere close to the EPA estimated mileage, you will need the 3.08:1 gear. If you are not planning n towing often or much weight, it will be fine

I have 3.08:1 gear and tow a light weight aluminuj bass boat (bass tracker) weighing about 1600 lbs total, and I don't even know it's there.

the one I'm looking at has 3.42 is that going to be close to 3.08 for gas milage. I got a ford 150 and getting around 14 mph, don't care to go below that. Window sticker has 15 city and 21 hwy. thanks

If no other factors affected mileage, a 3.08 should yield about 10% better mileage than the 3.42. Reality is its not that simple. The 3.08 will have to work a little harder on acceleration etc, but when cruising is turning slower rpms. There is a difference, but you will beat the hell out of the 14 you get now
