i don't want anything too big and im hoping to find something that will mate with my transmission. i have no problem buying an adapter plate but a new transmission is a little too rich for my blood.

or should i just upgrade the 2.8 it has with a cam, intake manifold, chip etc? pros an cons

any suggestions would be appreciated even if its a ford or other brand engine.

A 305 (GM's 5.0 liter V8) would be great. It should fit without modifications to the truck's body, and it would be plenty of engine for a small truck like a Sonoma. Plus, it is a fairly common engine. I have actually seen a few Ford Rangers that came from the factory with a 302 (special-ordered, of course).

The upgrades would be a just as much work as changing out for a V8 so (since I'm a fan of V8's) I would swap it out for a 350. You shouldn't have too much of a problem with the transmission bolting up either. The upgrades would probably cost more than what a 350 would cost anyway. Plus you could upgrade the 350 down the road.

I have a sbc350 (carbureted) That I want to put into my 03 2.2l ext sport with auto trans... Would it bolt up to my existing trans? Would I have to modify my wire harness? would it just be easier to get a 350T trans and get rid of my wire harness? I have done motor swaps before but nothing backwards like this... EFI to Carbed... THANKS! Rocco
