I have to change the thermostat on my 5.0 1500 Savana. Should I change the water pump whilst in there? There are 177,000Km/110,000Miles on the van. What mileage should the Alternator be rebuilt?Just wondering when other owners engine parts failed. TIA Tony

Hard question to answer when they start to fail, as long as your water pump is not leaking from the weep holes don't loose any sleep over it and the same goes with the alternator. I get about 150,00 miles average on my alternator before the bearing fails, the last alternator bearing fail on my alternator. I had it repaired and replaced the bearing with a higher rated bearing and has been in there now for over 200.000 miles/320,000 km (borrowed time now).

The water pump is the second one in my jimmy and on borrowed time also with over 350,000 miles/560,000 KM. If your still running the OEM alternator, have one ready soon. The bearing should be close to the life expectancy and the water pump also unless you have been follow up on your coolant service intervals.

Good luck and hope this helps. http://www.alternatorparts.com/

O.K. Thanks for the info.Do you buy parts from the GM dealer or parts source. I am just checking prices as I will be doing shocks and brakes.

Parts Source on 499 Hespeler Road, Cambridge, Ontario sells the life time replacement brake pad's, shocks, and water pumps. They also will turn the rotors for you if you need to.

The other place that i find is great for price is http://www.hotspotautoparts.com/. I picked up a set of brake pads and rotors, shoes and the replacement hard wear for just under $100.00 for my wife's Montana. :D

Good luck and give the guys at http://www.hotspotautoparts.com/ as call and see what price you can get from them and yes they also have life time replacement parts. Send me a private message if you need a garage here in Cambridge that can do the job for you.

Phone around Canadian Tire for a Haynes manual...they should have one at least at ONE location in the Camb area.

In an old service work van (2003 Savana) the starter failed at 305,000kms, van was used daily and the alternator was still going strong up until I sold it shortly thereafter replacing the starter. It's hard to say when to expect components to fail. Alternator is an easier part to replace... fuel pump assembly is not!
