I need to buy a rear end for my girlfriends 86' Jimmy but I need to know what the gear ratio is. Where or how would I be able to find out what the gear ratio is? A receptionist at a salvage yard told me it should be on a sticker in the glove box. I looked and all I seen was the vin number and a lot of 5 digit numbers on the Vehicle Service Identification sticker.

Your gear ratio will be defined by an RPO code. The salvage yard receptionist is correct in stating that most Jimmy's RPO codes are located on a sticker in the glove box. Alldata states that the 6th digit of the VIN defines the location of the RPO code label for a 1986 Jimmy. A "U" indicates the location as inside the glove box! Then use the Internet and search RPO code generator or decoder, to determine the ratio.

An easier way is to just call a GM dealer and provide them with the last 8 digits of the VIN and they can tell you what your differential ratio is on the Jimmy.
