Hey Everyone,
I have a 2010 Sierra 5.3 and after my truck has been siting for awhile it has a hard time starting. When I turn the key to start the truck it acts like it is going to start up but then the RPMs will shoot down for about 5 seconds and the truck sounds like it is about to die, then it will rev up really high and eventually calm down and level out. I didn't know if anyone had any ideas what I could do to figure out what was going on. At first I thought it might be the battery but I went and got that checked out and they said it was alright and I have also put some HEET into the gas to see if I got some bad gas somewhere. My truck has been doing this the past month or so and it doesn't do it if my truck has been started in the last 5 hours or so. PLEASE help or just give me an opinion on what I need to do. Thanks in advance.

They are the type that will say it didn't do it when they had it and send me back to the house.... I always go in there with an idea what is wrong and tell them it... Thats why I'm asking on here..

Have them test your IAC valve, it could be sticking when it's cold. The other thing is that is could be dirty with Carbon build up and you can try cleaning it.

To clean it is simple, just clean you throttle body with throttle body cleaner and make sure you pay attention to the IAC passage ways and use the whole can. Do not use Carburetor cleaner cause it's to corrosive to the gaskets used on the throttle body.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Do we assume that you have no CEL and that someone has hooked up a scanner and verified that there are no stored codes?
What I would do is go to the service manager and explain the problem. I would then tell him that I will leave the truck over night and I will come back in the morning. I would like the service tech to come out with me and start the truck. If the problem shows up then tell him to fix it under warranty. If it doesn't show up then you are SOL. Also remember you want the dealer to write up the problem so you have a record in case you need to use the LEMON LAW to get the truck returned to GM. My 2 cents.

No check engine light and no stored codes... I talked to a mechanic today and they said my truck's engine doesn't have an IAC valve but a TAU instead? It sounded like this was a whole unit instead of a piece by piece scenario. He said that GM has been having a lot of problems out of these and that he has seen problems with them in engines dating back to like 2006 I think he said. Anyways, he said it'd cost me about $400 for him to replace, and not looking to drop that, I bit the bullet and I am going to try to deal with the dealer on Monday... I will let all yall know what I find out, thanks for the help...

You should be covered under warranty, your Sierra is only a year old.

Good luck and keep us posted. ;)

How many miles are on the truck?

Have you or anyone removed the air cleaner in the past? Do you have an oiled air filter such as the K&N?

I have a 2010 GMC Sierra E. Cab SLT Z71 All Terrain and it starts flawlessly. 8900 miles and so far no problems

Haven't had it in yet... It only does in when it is cold outside and it hasn't been below 45 degrees here in a couple weeks... So I know when I take it in the dealer will say they couldn't get my truck to replicate the problem

My truck has 25,000 miles and it is just over a year old... And yes, I have a K&N Cold Air Intake. What does the oiled part matter?

Sometimes users over oil the filter and that oil gets sucked in and can contaminate the MAF sensor which results in erratic signals to the ecm.

My truck was doing this before I put the K&N intake on. I got the intake for Christmas and my truck started doing this in November. I should have taken it in then but I am in college and was at school all week and it was hard to get my truck in to the shop on the weekends that I actually came home. I also just thought that it was because of the cold weather. Also, I thought that it might have had something to do with the intake and took it off and put the stock one back on for 2 weeks. No change.

As far as my K&N, I don't recall oiling the air filter at all, I just used it how it came out of the box.
