2011 Sierra with 800 miles problem

Bob,

I've got the identical issues.

See my response to Zeke456.

I'm getting emails from other folks who are having the same transmission symptoms as I am and are attempting to post such to this forum but for some reason are being shut out! Anybody know why?

Also, seems that there's a similar 'transmission clunk' thread on the Edmunds GMC Sierra forum! Perhaps this IS a pervasive issue after all!

Thx.

Bob

Your post referencing that other location will probably disappear.

Clunk

I bought a 2011 and noticed the same clunk the first day I drove it. The dealership fount a problem with the rear leaf spring brackets. Parts were ordered and it was repaired. Good since. If needed, I can help connect you with my service adviser who should be able the explain what they found and what was needed to repair it.

well bob i hate to disagree with you but Mercedes 4 matic trans are clunky but they hide it with rpm shift points so the normal person does not feel it. Toyota ya right thats a good one man you can't even turn the sterring wheel to far over doing a u turn and they clunkin the front end. lol.

Bob i do this for a living i'm not taking out my as s
But i also belive you can't make everyone happy.

Happy, I'm glad you're happy with your GMC! Really! I'd be happy with mine as well IF the transmission would work as it should.

Would it make a difference if I told you that my business partner and my son also own GMC Sierras which I've driven numerous times - neither of which exhibit any jerky/clunky symptoms?

I've been driving for 50 plus years and I know a transmission problem when I see one, and I know that I know that I do have one with this truck!

Stay tuned!

Folks might be interested in what's on the Edmunds GMC forum re transmission issues. Seems that lots of folks are a bit unhappy with their transmissions! See the 'cut/paste' below!

I would like to help or be included in a formal complaint.

my 2011 has had problems since the day I bought it and GM refuses to fix it.
after my 3rd visit about my transmission the dealer I bought the truck from asked I not return to his store for any more complaints, maintenance, or repairs.
so much for customer service.

Sorry,

In one of my messages I stated this thread has over 1850 posts regarding the transmission issues. I was incorrect. gmcowners.com has 1850 "views" of a "Sierra Transmisssion Problem" thead. Which is much more than any other current thread on that forum.

This site has 850 "posts" regarding this issue.

Have the dealer check the rear leaf spring mounts. That is what caused my brand new 2011 4x4 Crew to make the same noise. Problem easily fixed.

Thx for the suggestion. I WILL have the rear leaf spring mounts checked; however, the noise is only half the problem. The other half is the sudden 'jerk' when the transmission downshifts!

Thx.

transmission problem

I'm likewise experiencing transmission problems . when i slow down and then speed up the transmission makes a clunk sound. this not good on a new truck.

Sorry to hear you’re also experiencing an issue with your transmission. Are you going to try and handle this yourself or has your dealer had any input?

Thanks,
Laura

Has anyone mentioned the rear end. According to a GM service manager I talked to about the problem it all comes down to what locking differential rear end you have in your vehicle. The one that comes with the 4.8 has more play in it than the one that comes with the 5.3.

I don't know how true this is but my daughters 98 has the clunk and she's been driving it for 13 years with no ill effects. So it might be a fact.

My 11 did it while I was test driving it but now the problem seems to have disappeared, so who knows.

Good luck and let us know.

2011 extended cab, Z-71, 5.3, 6 speed. less than 3K miles. Love the truck, 18 MPG in the city. I have the clunk and hesitation sometimes when slowing down for a turn then accelerating. The hesitation is like (I'm showing my age here) a bad accelerator pump in a carburetor, the clunk is like too much play in the driveline.
Could the hesitation problem be computer related - the engine changing between 4 and 8 cylinders?

the locking rear diff should not be engageing while slowing down nor speeding up unless you are flooring it and spinning the tires. i have a locking rear diff in my 2006 sierra and i have not heard nor felt it lock yet while on the street. and if it was the locking rear diff there would be atleast two clunks one to lock and the other to unlock.
i have a jeep with 37s and a powertrax in the rear and i can sometimes here it lock and unlock but it sounds more like a bang not a clunk. i think it either might be the trans or it might be the gears in the diff maybe the backlash isnt setup correctly the gears have to much play in them

The locking differential only will engage when one rear wheel spins faster than the other, 100 rpm to be exact. It will not engage over 20 mph. Its designed for traction, not for performance.

Btw - The is no difference between the 4.8 and the 5.3 locking differential, its exactly the same. That explanation by the dealer service manager falls under the old saying, "if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with BS."

The stabilitrac and traction control system these vehicles have can cause the hesitation you are describing. My 2011 Sierra crew cab 4x4 5.3 with the 6speed auto does it while accelerating and turning. This can be disabled by pressing the traction control / stabilitrac button on your dash and holding it down for 3 to 5 seconds. You will see that your stabilitrac and traction control will be off on the DIC. The engine won't temporarliy shut power off if it loses traction or the body rolls slightly in turns as long as its set this way. As for the cluncking on up or down shifts, I don't know because mine doesn't do it.
Wow, 18 mpg in city driving sounds good. Mine gets about 11.7 in city. and 17to 18 on the highway although I did change to agressive all terrain tires and a slight suspension lift.

I rec'd an automatic email from this forum stating that the msg below had been posted; however, I can't seem to find it on this forum thread. Can anyone explain what's going on here?

Zeke456,

I waited to reply to your post. My 2011 Sierra 1500/6 speed with 800 miles on it has been at the Dealer for a week with the identical problem. I also had slipping, clicking and a "pull" that they can't seem to correct. They replaced the torque converter. Didn't do much to help. I know GMC watches this site so I'll be polite, however, you and I aren't the only ones with this issue. The engineers that designed the 6 speed should be reassigned to the "Frigidare" unit (if GM still owns them).

Like you, I don't have much "free" time so this purchase is turning out to be a mistake.

Please let us know how your situation turns out. Good luck.
