Has anyone mentioned the rear end. According to a GM service manager I talked to about the problem it all comes down to what locking differential rear end you have in your vehicle. The one that comes with the 4.8 has more play in it than the one that comes with the 5.3.
I don't know how true this is but my daughters 98 has the clunk and she's been driving it for 13 years with no ill effects. So it might be a fact.
My 11 did it while I was test driving it but now the problem seems to have disappeared, so who knows.
Good luck and let us know.
2011 extended cab, Z-71, 5.3, 6 speed. less than 3K miles. Love the truck, 18 MPG in the city. I have the clunk and hesitation sometimes when slowing down for a turn then accelerating. The hesitation is like (I'm showing my age here) a bad accelerator pump in a carburetor, the clunk is like too much play in the driveline.
Could the hesitation problem be computer related - the engine changing between 4 and 8 cylinders?
